Each area outside Jerusalem's Old City walls has its own flavor. On the south side near Dung Gate, one can see people praying in the streets, asking for alms, starting the celebration of bar-mitzvahs abd bat-mitzvahs, local Jewish and Arab children going to school, soldiers on guard, visitors to the Temple Mount and to the Western Wall. The walls themselves hint at the might of civilizations long passed on, with caves and ritual baths carved from rock near their base.
